If you’re looking for reliable facilities that recycle aggregate materials and qualify for LEED we’ve compiled a list for you. All of these facilities are located about 30 miles from the Washington D.C. Metro area.
Now if you don’t know what are recycled aggregates, we have an answer for you:
“Recycled aggregate is defined as aggregate resulting from the processing of inorganic or mineral material previously used in construction.”-Handbook of Alkali-Activated Cements, Mortars and Concretes, 2015
After processing these aggregates facilities create products which they can then sell. These products include:
- RC-57 Recycled Concrete: This is the smallest sized concrete aggregate with a maximum size of 3/4 inches. This material is used frequently as a subgrade for base material, erosion prevention fill, and concrete slabs.
- RC-6 (Crusher Run) Recycled Concrete: The maximum size for this type of material is 1 and a half inches. This material can be used as a sub-base for roadways, residential driveways, and parking lots.
- RC-2 (Crusher Run) Recycled Concrete: The typical size for this type of recycled concrete is between 1 and a half to 2 and a half inches. This material is mostly used for drainage and erosion control, stabilization of wet areas, and construction entrances.
- RC-Surge (Reclaim) Recycled Concrete: The size of this type of material ranges between 3 and 8 inches. This type of material can be used for erosion control and slope protection.

“On a daily basis we receive approximately 1,000 to 2,000 tons of unprocessed demolished concrete, brick, block, and asphalt, including curbing, sidewalks, slabs, walls, etc. This material is pre-crushed with a pulverizer attached to an 117,000 pound excavator, then sorted; rebar and wire mesh is removed through a shaker screen to remove any loose debris and finally deposited into the crusher. The material is crushed and gravity falls through a series of various sized screens which produce four products for sale which are used in road construction, utility installations, and erosion control applications.” – The Recycling Center

“On a daily basis we receive approximately 1,00 to 2,000 tons of unprocessed demolished concrete, and block, including curbing, sidewalks, slabs, walls, etc. This concrete is first broken down in our crusher and then wire and rebar is removed (both by hand & by magnet on the machine). The rebar and wire is sent to a local scrap metal recycling facility. Once the concrete is crushed, it falls through a series of screens which produce two products for sale which are used for road construction, utility installations and erosion control applications. The products are: 1) RC6 Crusher Run, 2) RC2″. These products are processed utilizing 100% recycled content and resold as a substitute for quarried stone. Machado Construction produces approximately 110,000 tons on an annual basis.” – Machado Construction Company
